Shigar Fort

Shigar Fort belongs to the seventeenth-century architectural heritage of Baltistan. Its stone and timber construction is a reminder that the region’s valleys had their own ruling houses and building traditions. Shigar’s past should be distinguished from that of Skardu or Khaplu, even where their political histories intersect.

The conservation programme repaired the fort and adapted it for use as a heritage guesthouse. The surrounding settlement also received attention, including water and sanitation improvements and the revival of local building skills. The project treated the monument and the village as connected.

Its current use shows that preservation is not always a matter of freezing a building in one historical period. A new function can support maintenance, but it should remain possible to understand the older structure and its significance.
