Shandur Pass

Shandur is part of the historic route between the Chitral side and the Ghizer–Gilgit side of the mountains. Its significance predates its modern reputation as a polo venue. In 1895, Colonel Kelly’s relief column crossed the high country from Gilgit toward Chitral; W. G. L. Beynon’s contemporary account records the difficulty of that journey through snow.

Today, the lake, grazing land and polo ground are often photographed together. They represent different uses of the same upland landscape: movement, pastoral life and public gathering. Historical passage over Shandur is not evidence that the road is accessible at any particular time; seasonal access and festival arrangements need current local confirmation.
