Ganish Settlement

Ganish shifts the story of Hunza from palaces to a historic community settlement. Conservation work has included four small mosques, the communal jataq space, a pond and entry structures. These elements show how worship, water and collective life were arranged within a compact settlement.

The restoration received UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage recognition. These are conservation awards, rather than inscription of the village on the World Heritage List. When reading the settlement, look beyond a single age on a sign: repairs, continued use and the participation of residents are also part of its history. The Hunza chapters place Ganish within the wider story of water, authority and social change.
