Deosai Plains

Deosai’s history is partly an environmental one. The plateau was designated a national park in 1993, with the Himalayan brown bear a central focus of conservation. Its rolling highland terrain differs sharply from the narrow valleys around it, and its wetlands connect the story of wildlife with that of water.

Pakistan submitted Deosai to UNESCO’s Tentative List in 2016. This is a step toward possible consideration, not World Heritage inscription. The submission describes the plateau’s ecological importance; its older wildlife counts should not be mistaken for a current census. Visitors encounter a protected landscape shaped by both natural processes and decisions about how people use it.
