Chitral Fort

The fort at Chitral was a centre of the Mehtar’s authority. In 1895 it became the focus of a siege during a violent succession crisis. A garrison including British officers and Indian soldiers held the fort while relief columns approached from the south and from Gilgit. The surviving colonial accounts describe the building and the fighting in detail, but tell the story from the defenders’ perspective.

Compare the historical photograph in this gallery with the later view: the fort is evidence of a political landscape, not just an architectural attraction. The regional history explains the rival claimants, local alliances and imperial intervention. A photograph does not establish current public access to the interior.
