Altit Fort

Altit Fort is closely bound to the village around it. Its defensive position and compact stone-and-timber construction belong to the history of authority and settlement in Hunza. It should be understood alongside Baltit, not confused with it: the two are separate buildings with different histories.

Restoration at Altit was completed in 2010. The programme also worked with the village’s living needs, including water and sanitation. Conserving the building’s structure helped preserve evidence of local engineering, while the surrounding community remained part of the project.

Today, the fort provides a starting point for reading the relationship between landscape, buildings and everyday life. Notice the route through the settlement, the use of timber and stone, and the way private and shared spaces fit together. These are historical clues as well as visual details.
